Shooting in Chicago 9-20-01
The Chicago Tribune included a story this week about an 8 year old child who was struck by a stray
bullet in the 1900 block of North Spaulding Ave. The story said this boy was the third child shot
since the weekend. We think that tutoring/mentoring programs that operate in the non-school hours
and offer a wide range of learning activities, can be a way to reduce the violence in inner city
neighborhoods. However these programs need more volunteers, more money, more business partners to
succeed. Please see the web page in the TutorMentor File Cabinet called shooting_9-20-01.htm to
find mentoring programs, businesses, churches and schools in the neigborhood of the shooting.

Mark Lane Shot
The front page of the 12/12 Chicago SunTimes shows a full photo of Ophra Winfrey and MarkLane Jr.
In 1993 Mark was a co-star with Ophra in the movie, "There are no Children Here". While he
survived gangs in the movie, he did not in real life. He was shot two days before Thanksgiving
at age 22. There are many Tutor/Mentor programs in the Chicago area where you can offer kids
an alternative to gangs.

Girl Shot by Gang
Fifth-grade student Adamnesha Harris and her family know how lucky she is to be alive,
just days after the 12-year-old was shot on the city's Southeast Side. She remembers
hearing a gang slogan being yelled and the group she was with scattering when another
group of teens appeared with a gun. "The bullet his me before I could get between the
two cars. It was burning," said Adamnesha, who was in stable condition Friday in
University of Chicago Medical Center after being shot in the back in the 8800 block
of South Houston Avenue. To learn more about where you can help click on
